Binder tops as SA racers star across the world

Moto2 hero Brad Binder was without doubt South Africa’s racing superstar over another busy weekend of success for local racers weekend when he resisted incredible pressure as his pursuers quite literally fell one by one by the wayside to deliver an incredible home win for Read Bull KTM at Austria’s Moto GP round on Sunday. Compatriot Steven Odendaal enjoyed a solid ride to 20th in Moto2 while Darryn Binder 15th in Moto3. 

Across the pond at Sonoma, Mathew Scholtz also did South Africa proud with third for his third MotoAmerica Superbike podium of the season in Saturday's opening race, while Cameron Petersen came home ninth, while Dominic Doyle retired from the Junior Supersport race.

On four wheels, Tasmin Pepper ended up 12th in the Brands Hatch W Series Women’s World Championship finale to close her season off tenth in the championship chase and book her place in the 2020 series. Also at Brands Hatch, SA DTM rookies Sheldon van der Linde qualified sixth for race 1 before driving his BMW home 8th, while Jonathan Aberdein (audi) started from pit lane to drive a tactical race to ninth. The South Africans then diced in race 2 before Aberdein spun to leave van der Linde to end 7th, while Jonathan slipped back to 13th. Elder van der Linde brother Kelvin meanwhile increased his German GT Masters championship lead in spite of a troubled weekend at Zandvoort in his Audi R8

In national action, round 3 of the SA Rotax Max karting championship at iDube saw KZN local hero Benj Habig win DD2 at iDube from Brad Liebenberg, while Michael Stephen and Jonathan Pieterse stormed to DD2 Masters and Max 175 triples and Shrien Naidoo took two senior Max wins over Charl Visser’s one. In schoolboy action, Ethan Coetzee beat Aqil Alibhai to Junior Max, Troy Snyman and Luviwe Sambudla took a Micro and Micro Max triple apiece and Rayan Karriem won baby Bambino.

Also in KZN, round 5 of the TRP SA Motocross nationals in Pietermaritzburg saw Tristan Purdon (KTM) do the MX1 double over Lloyd Vercueil (Yamaha) and Maddy Malan (Husqvarna), while Kerim Fitz-Gerald (KTM) beat Joshua Mlimi (KTM) and Anthony Raynard (Yamaha) to both MX2 wins. Tyson Engelbrecht (KTM) won the MX3 over-30 race, Ian Topliss (Yamaha) and Brett Bircher (KTM) shared over-40 wins and Rodney Odendaal (Husqvarna) took the over-50 honours.

Kayla Raaff (Husqvarna) took her 10th ladies MX win in 10 starts, while Dalton Venter (Husqvarna) dominated 125cc High School, KTM lads Blake Young and Leonard du Toit shared 85cc Pro wins, Emmanuel Bako (KTM) won both 85cc Junior motos, local lad Jordan Van Wyk (Husqvarna) took 65cc and Jake van Schoor and Brody Bircher shared baby 50cc wins.

Cape Regional race action at Killarney saw drama when the Clubmans races were cancelled and then GTi Challenge leader, Class C lad Giordano Lupini suffered an enormous race 2 accident after winning race 1 to leave Jarred Simpson to take race 2, while Nian du Toit and Eden Thompson took Classes A and B to set up an epic overall title fight with Lupini. Marcel Angel dod the V8 Masters double with Sean Moore and Fabio Tafani’ sharing the seconds, while Glen Phillips took Supercar honours.

On two wheels, Hayden Jonas (Yamaha) made it 12 wins from 12 Superbkle starts, while Kewyn Snyman took Supersport, Slade van Niekerk (Yamaha) beat Womens Day heroine Zante Otto (KTM) to Powersport and Lubabalo Ntisana (Kawasaki) took the Clubmans win. Back to the cars, Craig Jarvis (Ginetta) thundered to Sports & GT victory in his  over Sandro Biccari (Juno) and Maarten Prins (Porsche); Charles Arton (Datsun 280Z) beat Franco Donadio (Escort) and Jono Gunn (Scirocco) in the Historic races and Race 2 winner Byron Mitchell took Formula Libre after first race winner Dee-Jay Booysen hit trouble.
