Locals shine in races home and away

South African racers impressed as usual in a broad variety of motorsports across the globe from Port Elizabeth to Utah, Cape town to Brands Hatch, Barcelona to iDube, but it was local racing that topped this weekend's bill with PE’s Aldo Scribante hosting the Volkswagen National Race Day.

Bradley Liebenberg proved tp be the PE star, taking four wins out of five races in both the Falken Polo Cup and in GTC2, Johan Fourie and local hero Simon Moss shared the GTC wins Scott Temple dominated Investchem Formula 1600 and Jozi visitor George Economedes took both local EP Saloon races. David McFadden and Clinton Seller shared Superbike wins and Kewyn Snyman took 600 honours.

SA riders also starred around the world on two wheels — Darryn Binder impressed in a wild race as he chased another podium, only to be taken out and end 15th in the Spanish Moto3 Grand Prix, while brother Brad struggled to 11th and Steven Odendaal finished 22nd in Moto2. A little further north, Phil Atkinson ended fourth in the opening Ducati race, Bjorn Estment took sixth in Superstock 1000 and Brent Harran ninth in Superstock 600 at the Brands Hatch British Superbike races.

Meanwhile on the other side of the pond, Matthew Scholtz was second in opening Utah MotoAmerica Superbike race as Cameron Petersen retired, with Scholtz fourth and Petersen eighth on the second race grid as we wrote. Young Sam Lockhoff ended 12th in the opening Junior Cup race and was 8th on the second race grid.

Moving back to four wheels, two SA teams encountered a difficult weekend in the two Road to Le Mans 24-hour curtain raisers — SA Endurance champions Nick Adcock and Michael Jensen ended 34th after a tough first heat and 45th in the second in their LPM3 Norma, while Greg Mills sharing his GT3 Bentley with former 24-hour winner Jan Lammers ended 41st in both races.
