Toyota GR Supra

Super Toyota unleashed in SA

Toyota’s all new GR Supra has arrived in South Africa. Toyota performance arm Gazoo Racing’s first standalone global model and the comeback fifth generation of that legendary Toyota badge was conceived as a sports car in its purest form without compromise to pleasure or driving experience in a classic front-mounted straight-six engine driving the rear wheels to perfectly celebrate that Supra legend.

Exhaustively fine tuned by Toyota Gazoo Racing at the Nürburgring Nordschleife and on roads around the world to ensure it  delivered on its promises by Master Driver and Toyota President Akio Toyoda himself, GR Supra transfers Gazoo’s Le Mans, WRC and Dakar winning tech to the man on the street.

Supra was co-developed with BMW to delver an exhilarating blend of power, agility and precision handling via a short wheelbase and wide track, low centre of gravity in a lightweight and highly rigid body, Supra’s 250kW 500Nm twin-scroll turbocharged 3-litre six drives the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic to deliver smooth and powerful acceleration thanks to vast tracts  of torque at any engine speed.

The smooth and free-revving direct fuel injection continuously variable valve control mill boasts Normal or a Sport driving mode that also perks up Supra’s soundtrack and throttle response, shift pattern, damping, steering and active differential performance, while a Track mode reduces the level of system intervention, giving the driver greater control of the vehicle’s dynamic performance.

An ECU controlled active differential senses Supra’s driving attitude to appropriately apportion drive torque across the rear axle depending on the driving situation to optimise stability and cornering performance and also allow extreme drifting should the driver so be inclined, while Supra is capable of rushing to 100 km/h in just 4.3 seconds.

Developed off a clean sheet, Supra’s highly rigid chassis offers a ‘golden’ 1.55 wheelbase to track ratio for its double-joint spring MacPherson spring strut front and five-link rear dual-mode Adaptive Variable Suspension with electric power steering shod with stepped-width 19-inch forged alloy wheels and high-grip Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyres.

Supra's stopping and stability is taken care of by Brembo opposed-four-pot calliper 348 x 36mm front and floating single-piston 345 x 24mm rear ventilated disc ABS brakes with standby, drying and anti-fade EBS and Brake Assist, backed up by Vehicle Stability and Traction Control, and Hill-start and Active Cornering Assist.

Evoked by the Supra legend, the new car was designed to deliver best drag and lift characteristics and an ideal front-to-rear weight balance transferred tot he road via lightweight but highly rigid 19-inch forged alloy wheels and presented in a spectrum of eight evocative Gazoo red, white and black as well as yellow and metallic hues of blue, silver and grey and a an exclusive matte grey colour too.

The driver-orientated cockpit is hewn around the paddle shifting multifunction leather steering wheel and other controls, high-definition gauges with a 3D-effect tachometer and a head-up display, while central multimedia infotainment is operated by the steering, touchscreen or a rotary controller and there’s more than ample baggage space for two.

GR Supra’s basic Track model is more performance centric but does include includes dual-zone auto air conditioning, smart entry with push-button start and LED tech adaptive headlights, taillights and daytime running lights. Add auto-dimming power mirrors, rain-sensing wipers and a rear-view camera, as well as 10-speaker audio with 6.5-inch Bluetooth and USB infotainment.

GR Supra steps up to 8.8-inch infotainment with satellite navigation, wireless charging and 12-speaker JBL audio, power-adjustable leather and Alcantara heated and memory pews, Tyre Pressure Monitoring, Park Distance Control and Heads-Up Display and Adaptive Variable Suspension.

The more luxurious Supra also packs Pre-Collision, Lane Departure, Adaptive Cruise Control, Automatic High Beam Adaptive Front-light  and Road Sign Assist, Blind Spot, Rear Cross-Traffic and Collision-equipped Toyota Safety Sense and Intelligent parking sensors.

The Toyota GR Supra Track comes in red only and costs  R953K, while full-spec GR Supra cost R 1.07-million in red, R1.08M in metallic and R1.09M in metallic paint. All models pack extendable 4-service/80 000km service plan and 3-year/100 000km warranty.
