120Y salutes past on cusp of new dawn

We all know that the Opel Corsas will soon be replaced — the Blitz’ first new model under its new owners PSA, so look at this as a bit of a double blast from the past. Why double? Well this one actually celebrates 120 years of Opel in 2019 and best of all, it recalls the best of Opel, not least the brand’s halcyon days in SA as Delta — remember those yellow Group N racers? I do — special times.

Old school, this commemorative edition packs a pretty impressive level of spec from a rear-view camera along with front and rear park-assist to an anti-theft alarm and immobiliser with remote-controlled central locking, along with a 7” Infotainment System with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and six Premium Speakers. Add upgraded cloth upholstery and some cool trip bits including a 120 badge and embroidery, while 120 is set apart by a cool set of 16” Gun Metal Silver Alloy Wheels.

Powered by Enjoy’s familiar, contemporary and quite handy 66kW 170Nm turbo triple, 120 gets on with it and while its well kitted out, it remains quite plain and understated and gets on with the job, which is what most buyers in this neck of the woods are most concerned about in an old school kind of way.

So, while this little Corsa certainly calls back the past, it is also very much the end of an era – not only is Opel in the process of completely overhauling the brand under Peugeot-Citroen, but this car’s all-new replacement is also imminently set to up the game. So if the goose-over-the-moon badge and having the latest is that important to you, maybe wait for the new one.

Otherwise this little charmer is still a well-equipped, capable and quite contemporary piece of kit. - Michele Lupini
